Room size guide
Measure once, buy with confidence
Common clearances and sizing rules of thumb for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.
Living room
Walkways
Leave about 30–36" for main walkways through the room.
Coffee table
Keep about 14–18" between the sofa and the coffee table.
Sofa vs. wall
A sofa looks best at about two-thirds the length of the wall it sits on.
Dining room
Chair clearance
Allow roughly three feet between the table edge and walls or furniture.
Seats per length
Plan about 24" of table edge per person.
Lighting
Hang a chandelier about 30–36" above the tabletop.
Bed vs. room size
| Bed | Mattress | Suggested minimum room |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 7 ft × 10 ft |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 10 ft × 10 ft |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 10 ft × 10 ft |
| King | 76" × 80" | 12 ft × 12 ft |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 12 ft × 12 ft |
Leave about two to three feet around the bed so you can walk, make the bed and open drawers.
Rugs & TVs
Rug sizing
In a living room, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of all seating to sit on it; 8×10 ft suits many rooms.
Rug under a dining table
Let the rug extend about 24" past the table on every side so chairs stay on it.
TV viewing distance
Sit roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen’s diagonal away. A TV stand should be wider than the TV.
